Course Description
This qualification develops the learner’s knowledge, understanding and skills in delivering first aid in an outdoor environment. This qualification meets the requirements for Emergency First Aid at Work as outlined in the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982. It also meets sports and outdoor industry NGB requirements. This qualification has been developed inline with NGB requirements and the Institute of Outdoor Learning (IOL) first aid guidance. The qualification is at Band 3 on their framework.
Course Duration
This course is delivered over two days as a face to face course.
Pre-Requisites
Learners should be a minimum of 16 years to undertake this qualification
Learners between 14-16 years can undertake the qualification, however they should not be relied upon by employers to be a sole Emergency first aider.
Learners will be required to demonstrate first aid procedures as they would in a real environment. This includes providing CPR to a casualty who is on the floor, therefore, they should be physically capable of doing so.

This course covers a range of content including:
- Roles and Responsibilities of a First Aider in the Outdoor Environment
- Management of an Incident in the Outdoor Environment
- Unresponsive Casualties
- Choking
- External Bleeding
- Shock
- Care of patients who have suffered immersion in water
- Secondary Survey
- Bones, Muscles and Joint Injury
- Burns and Scalds
- Eye Injuries
- Bites and Stings
- Anaphylaxis
- Major Illness
Course Assessment
For this course learners are required to undertake an invigilated MCQ paper, and observed practical tasks which must be passed in order to complete the course.
Learners must have sufficient command of the English language to understand and undertake the recommended assessment methods for this qualification and it is strongly recommended that learners should be working at level 2 English literacy.
Certificate and Validity
Upon completion of the course including the submission and approval by QNUK of the relevant course paperwork, candidates will receive a certificate which is valid for a period of three years.
